Rhythm’s backcourt tells more than its record

Rebekah Gardner and Kaitlyn Chen gave Rhythm two top-six finishers, with contrasting statistical profiles that reward a closer look.

Rhythm finished the 2026 season at Nashville Municipal Auditorium with a 2–4 record, but that mark tells only part of its athletes’ story. Rebekah Gardner placed third on the final individual leaderboard with 6,124 AU points, while Kaitlyn Chen finished sixth with 5,294. Their numbers offer a useful off-season angle: two guards associated with the same team reached the top six with different balances of scoring, rebounding and assists.

Chen’s passing average stands out immediately. The UConn guard recorded 5.7 assists per game, second only to Odyssey Sims’ 6.3 among the eight athletes listed atop the final leaderboard. Chen also averaged 13.8 points and 3.2 rebounds. Her scoring average was the lowest of those eight, yet her sixth-place finish is a reminder that scoring averages and the AU points leaderboard are different ways of reading a season.

Gardner’s line leaned more heavily toward scoring and rebounding: 19.7 points, 5.8 rebounds and 3.7 assists per game. The UCLA guard averaged 5.9 more points and 2.6 more rebounds than Chen, while Chen supplied two more assists per game. Those contrasts give each finish its own shape. Gardner’s third place was supported by a broad statistical line, while Chen’s assist average provides the clearest standout number in hers.

Week 4 also showed why Rhythm’s record deserves more than a passing glance. The team lost 84–72 to Glow and 110–109 to Gold Rush before beating Eclipse 91–87. That closing win came against a team that finished 4–2, a useful counterpoint to Rhythm’s own final mark. With the league on hiatus for 2027, Gardner and Chen offer two worthwhile starting points for revisiting what the 2026 numbers reveal beyond team records.
